John Wick is an ex-hitman whose wife has passed away due to sickness. Prior to her death, she arranged for a dog to be given to John in the event that she dies, to serve as her replacement for John’s love. He loved her wife very much and was actually the reason for his retirement from his violent job. An incident occurred were a group of Russian gangsters – with the leader who happens to be the son of his old boss – broke into his home, stole his car and killed his beloved dog. This made him come out of his retirement and go back to killing as he was determined to make them pay for what they did.
I really love seeing Keanu Reeves back in the big screen especially in this movie. The effects were amazing and the storyline was okay. It was just “okay” because there’s nothing original about it. The plot has been used before though not done in the same way as this movie. The fight scenes were well choreographed and realistic as well. There’s no exaggerated knockouts, no far-flung-from-a-kick scene, none of that. Just fight scenes that you’ll more likely see live, in action, like in the streets and not the over-the-top fights that were common in Hollywood movies. The added wit in the movie was timed well too and made the movie not ultra-serious. The movie was also intriguing in a way that would make you think if there really are secret hired-assassins’ society. It would also be alarming to know that your local waste disposal service provider caters to dead bodies and crime scene clean ups as well. Eeeek!
It’s also surprising that all who knew John Wick was afraid of him and never tried to piss him off, especially Jimmy the Cop. He saw the dead bodies and just cautiously asks if John was back in his job and then proceeded to let him be, as if he saw nothing. After seeing the movie, one can only imagine how more intense John’s reaction would be if it were his wife that was killed and not just the dog. Overall, this is one of the best action films made and a great comeback for Keanu Reeves.
