Robert De Niro is a boxing champion. He has fought against his counterpart and has lost. He has a brother who proves quite helpful. He helps him beat his rival. Robert falls in love with Cathy who is much younger than him. He also fights his opponent and wins but there is a turnout of events when the court overrules Robert’s plea. He gets insecure of his wife. This puts him in a lot of trouble. He is then suspected from the boxing club but later on accepted back. The feud about his wife’s insecurity spills over to the neighbors who get hurt as a result. The wife demands for a divorce and full custody of their children. He acts in an outrageous manner leading to his arrest and imprisonment which he regrets. After a year he is released from prison and reunites with his brother. He apologizes for his actions. He rehearses on a particular movie which he is destined to perform. He is called on stage to do the same. This is followed by a welcoming applause from the crowd. Robert is now reformed.
The film has breathtaking scenes. The argument between him and his brother is funny. How his brother claims that Robert is killing himself with food is hilarious. In addition how the brother answers back when asked if he slept with Robert’s wife is very funny. He asks him where he got the balls to ask such a question. Preparations made on Robert before his match are side-splitting with all those liquids poured on his chest. The fighting scene where he is beaten and left to stagger and stare at his opponent is funny. What’s more are his rehearsals that totally turn out as comics.
The film has encapsulated bad parts. In the fighting scene, Robert is attacked brutally but cannot defend himself. His face has been distorted and is bleeding. In prison he cries after he is thrown into a dark dungeon. Before the ordeal he acts stubborn and the guards are forced to use force to get him to the cell. It’s emotional to watch him punch the walls using his hands and head and end wailing like a small child.
This film is interesting and gives a detailed story of Robert who is an icon to man.
