Stepmom is the story of friendship between two outstanding women. Jackie (Sarandon) has been divorced and is a mother of two kids Anna and Ben. And Isabel (Julia Roberts) is a famous fashion photographer, at the peak of her career. Isabel is Jackie’s ex- husband Luke’s (Harris) girlfriend. Luke decides to take this relationship to a next step but his children fiercely reject the idea of “Stepmom”. But then there is a twist, Jackie is diagnosed with cancer and she has a very little time to live. Now, the family crisis causes Jackie to ascend above mutual hostility and to share maternal duties with Isabel for the sake of family. Will Isabel be able to be a good stepmom or will family accept her as their new mom?
This movie is a family drama that deals with maturity, intelligence, humanity and exceptional realism. It is a real tearjerker as Jackie and Isabel portray the picture of heroism, feminism and sainthood. However, parents might feel that movie has some very grim topics such as death and divorce. But both characters have shown the struggle realistically how to cope with family crises. Sarandon and Robert have carried their role very confidently and realistically. Initially, Sarandon teaches the children to hate their new mom which is always taken positively by Roberts. Especially, the scene where the Ben is lost she claims that during her invigilation it never happened. Later, it came out to be untrue. But that’s what really a mother does to keep her children off from stepmom. Even the positive efforts made by Isabel are replied with sarcastic comments by Jackie. And then there comes the lovely moment where she finds a mom for her children in form of Jackie and how they sat each other at solving their insecurities and turning into great friends. This will make you cry.
The script and acting is very good and skilled. Julia and Sarandon have very glowing and realistic performances with minute feelings of humanity. Harris has been absent almost the whole time at second half of the film and only appears out at the family photo. The film mainly rotates around Jackie and Isabel giving you emotional and sentimental ride
The movie is an emotional ride of sentiments and sorrow. It will take you into a real world and will flow your emotions out. If you will ask me that if I still want to ride in flow of emotions. I will definitely say YES because this connects you with real world with touches to humanity, feminism and sainthood.
