The film is about friends who have passion for having fun together including hunting deer. After the wedding of Steven (John Savage), he and his friends Michael (Robert De Niro) and Nick (Christopher Walken) go to Vietnam as enlisted men, leaving behind their work at the factory and the loves of the lives. The three experience the horrors of the war and later become prisoners of the enemies, the Vietcong. In the prison, they are forced into participating in the Russian roulette and go against each other. Michael manages to make themselves escape the prison, but they later get separated. What happens next can be considered as unspeakable. If I were you, I would not bother to prepare some popcorn. Just be ready for more horrifying scenes.
This 1978 movie shows the reasons why we should avoid having wars. As they say, nobody wins in wars. Everyone is a loser. Some are able to go home to their families, but not without disturbing experiences that they bring with them for the rest of their lives. The actors in the film realistically show the different emotions and reactions of the characters in threatening situations. And there are numerous scenes with this kind of situations. Watching the movie makes me feel so grateful I am not in their positions that I have said a prayer for all the soldiers in the battlefields and the civilians who are trapped in the danger zones. Believe me. I have seen a lot of them! I’m a ghost, remember?
Now, my favorite scene. Wait. Do I have a favorite scene in this movie? If I would just consider the superficial level of the scenes, without giving so much analysis to it, then, I have a favorite scene. Otherwise, I do not have any. So, instead of a favorite scene, I will share what I consider the best scene. One particular Russian roulette scene has put me off my seat and if you are not affected by it, maybe you are not human at all, or you are a human without a heart. Movie endings may either be happy or sad. The ending of this film, for me, is neither. Is that even possible? Check out the movie and find out if you feel the same way about the ending.
