The Princess Diaries is an American romantic comedy released on 29th July, 2011 adapted from the novel of the same name written by Meg Cabot. It is directed by Garry Marshall and stars Ann Hathaway as Princess Mia, Julie Andrews as Queen Dowager, Heather Matarazzo as Lily, Robert Schwartzman as Michael and Hector as Queen’s right hand
The movie depicts the story of a 15 year old teenage girl Mia Thermopolis debuting Ann Hathaway who lives an ordinary life in San Francisco being unaware of the fact that she has royal blood in her veins. Mia and her best friend Lily are known as ‘freaks’ in school and Mia has a strong crush on Josh. On her 16TH birthday she gets to know that she is not an ordinary girl but a real life princess of Genovia and heir to her father’s throne disclosed by Queen Dowager. This secret changes her life and enters her into a magical yet courteous life of princess. She finds difficult to adjust the courteous royal life meanwhile, she gets dumped by Josh to get fame. But the story doesn’t ends here; there is a secret admirer and true lover of princess. He is Michael, Mia’s best friend Lily’s brother. Will Mia be able to face the challenges of royal life and make her way to throne and true love?
The director of the movie has very interestingly shown the ordinary life of a teenage girl at San Francisco and dramatic chic changes to royal life. It puts a special light on how difficult is the life of royals as compared to tension free independent ordinary life. Movie charmingly shows the dream of every teenage girl of becoming a princess. The best part is the stunning makeover of princess with curly hairs straightened with the famous dialogue “why don’t you do something about your hair” during exciting transformations from nerdy Mia to gorgeous Princess Mia. The utilization of limousine and a bodyguard makes one wonder how enchanted royal life is. However, director leaves some loop holes in movie such as at a dinner, certain guest is shown drunken but later the guest gets vanished without payoff. However, this movie is still smash hit and presents some positive messages such as significance of being true and loyal to oneself, popularity, friendship and being thoughtful and caring for others.
If you are a girl who dreams of being princess, enjoy your own fantasies and more than that you understand the value of true friendship and love. Then you should be watching it just right now.
